Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America meets April 20

Sports car racing fans will hear the latest exciting racing news from International Motor Sports Association President John Doonan at the upcoming Chicago Region Sports Car Club of America General Membership Meeting.

The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20 at K1 Speed, 2381 E. Army Trail Road in Addison. It is open to the public and there is no admission fee to attend. Guests are encouraged to pre-register on the website, but it is not mandatory.

Topics from Doonan will include: the new class structure of the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship; the exciting influx of manufacturers to the IMSA series; the expanded relationship between IMSA and the SCCA; and the new Le Mans Daytona Hybrid (LMDH) car coming in 2023. It is expected to compete in IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Prior to becoming president of the International Motor Sports Association, Doonan was the face of Mazda’s North American motorsports program for many years. He led the company’s participation in IMSA, American Le Mans Series, Grand Am, MX-5 Cup and USF2000 championship, as well as Mazda’s driver development program.

Doonan’s racing knowledge is well grounded in his background. His father and grandfather were all runners, which gave him a unique and acute perspective on the sport.

The author Burt Levy of the series The Last Open Road will also be present as a special guest. He will have copies of his new book, “The 200 MPH Steamroller Book III – Out of the Mist”, as well as other books and merchandise available for purchase. Levy was born in Chicago and has won over 70 car races and eight championships, driving some of the fastest and most famous automobiles in the world. His passion for racing is exemplified in his cult classic novels.
